Székesfehérvár is known for ice hockey and football, but the city also has more than seventy years of basketball history. The club has changed its name several times and for twenty years carried the name of a local company: it was as Albacomp that the team first became champions. This article puts the history of Alba Fehérvár together from public sources and flags where the sources disagree.

1949–1979: MDSE and Építők

The club was founded in 1949 as Székesfehérvári MDSE [1]. Two years later, in 1951, it became Székesfehérvári Építők ("Builders"), a name it kept for almost three decades, until 1979 [1].

1979–1992: Alba Regia Építők

In 1979 the team took the name Alba Regia Építők [1]. Alba Regia is the Latin name of Székesfehérvár, and it lives on in today's club name. The team plays at the Alba Regia Sportcsarnok, which holds 3,000 spectators [1].

1992–2000: Albacomp and three titles in a row

In 1992 the local company Albacomp became the naming sponsor, and the team played under that name for twenty years [1]. According to the Hungarian weekly HVG, the company was the men's team's naming sponsor for almost two decades [4].

This era brought the club's first big success. Albacomp won the league in 1997–98, 1998–99 and 1999–2000 [1][3]. In 2000 it also won the Hungarian Cup, beating Pécs 74–56 in the final [2]. In these years the team regularly played in the Korać Cup (five seasons between 1994–95 and 2000–01) [1].

One well-known player of the era is Kornél Dávid. He played in Fehérvár in the second half of the 1990s, and his number 9 shirt was retired in 2001 [1].

2000–2012: thirteen years without a title

After the 2000 title came a long gap. The team finished third several times [1], and in 2009 it won the Central European Basketball League (CEBL) [1].

In March 2012 Albacomp declared bankruptcy. The head of the basketball section said at the time that the team's future was not in danger: support from the city would allow it to finish the season [4]. Since 2012 the club has been called Alba Fehérvár [1].

2013–2026: two more titles

Success came quickly under the new name. In 2013 Alba Fehérvár beat the defending champions, Szolnoki Olaj, 75–66 in the fifth game of the final, and became champions again after 13 years [3]. In the same season it also won the Hungarian Cup, again against Szolnok, 74–54 [2].

In 2017 came another double: the league title and the Hungarian Cup, the cup final won by a single point, 59–58, against Szolnoki Olaj [1][2]. The team then played in the qualifying rounds of the Basketball Champions League (2017–18), and earlier spent one season in the EuroCup (2013–14) [1]. Its most recent FIBA Europe Cup campaign was 2024–25 [1].

5 things many people don't know

  1. The first league title was won under a company's name. Albacomp was the naming sponsor for twenty years [1][4].
  2. The club name keeps the Latin name of Székesfehérvár: Alba Regia [1].
  3. Thirteen years passed between two titles, from 2000 to 2013 [3].
  4. Both modern-era cup finals were won against Szolnok, in 2013 and 2017 [2].
  5. Number 9 was retired in honour of Kornél Dávid, in 2001 [1].

What we do not know from these sources

  • The sources disagree on the number of Hungarian Cups. The English club article says four, while the article on the cup's history lists three (2000, 2013, 2017) [1][2]. The club article also mentions a 1990 win, but its season table does not show it [1].
  • The source contradicts itself on the number of third-place finishes [1], so we give no exact figure.
  • We found no verifiable summary of the 2025–26 season.
