The three games in brief

Game 1. The Brewers won; according to the sources opened, catcher William Contreras threw out two runners trying to steal, reached base three times and drove in a run. The final score was not given on the pages opened.

Game 2. According to MLB.com, the Rays scored four runs in the first inning, helped by errors, but the Brewers came back: Sal Frelick tied the game in the sixth and Cooper Pratt got the winning hit, 5–4. These were the first World Series games in Milwaukee in 44 years.

Game 3. According to ESPN's report:

  • in the fifth inning the Brewers scored eight runs, setting a postseason record with seven straight hits with two outs;
  • rookie left-hander Robert Gasser allowed one hit through six innings and faced the minimum 18 batters – according to the source, the first left-hander to do so in a World Series game since Sandy Koufax in 1965;
  • Jackson Chourio went 4-for-5 and stole a base;
  • the Brewers had 16 hits in total and won their eighth straight postseason game.

How the series works

The World Series is best of seven: the first team to win four games is champion. The Brewers are the National League (NL) champions, the Rays the American League (AL) champions. According to ESPN, the Brewers led the majors with 103 regular-season wins and swept the Dodgers 4–0 in the NL Championship Series; the Rays led the AL with 98 wins.

A few basic concepts:

TermMeaning
Inninga game has nine innings; each team bats once and fields once
Runthe unit of scoring: a player circles all four bases
Hita batted ball on which the batter reaches base without an error
Outafter three outs, the teams switch
ERAthe average number of runs charged to a pitcher per nine innings

What history says about 3–0

According to ESPN's figures:

  • in best-of-seven postseason series, 43 teams have trailed 0–3; only one, the 2004 Boston Red Sox, came back, against the Yankees;
  • in the World Series, 25 teams have led 3–0; 21 of them swept and four won in five games.

These statistics describe past frequencies. They do not determine the outcome of the next game, and this article draws no conclusion about it.

The two clubs' background

The Brewers were founded in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots and moved to Milwaukee in 1970. Their only previous World Series came in 1982, as an American League team, when they lost Game 7 to St. Louis. In 29 seasons the Rays have reached the World Series twice: they lost to the Phillies in five games in 2008 and to the Dodgers in six in 2020.

Game 4 is on Tuesday night, US time, in St. Petersburg. This week US Eastern time is five hours behind Central European time, so an evening US start falls in the early hours of Wednesday in Europe (this article's conversion; the start time was not given in the source opened).

5 things many people don't know

  1. The Brewers have switched leagues. In 1982 they played the World Series as an American League team; today they are in the National League.
  2. They win from behind. Including the regular season, the Brewers are 41–37 in games where the opponent scored first.
  3. Comebacks are a record too. According to MLB.com, the Brewers have overcome more than one four-run deficit in a single postseason; only four teams had done so before.
  4. The Rays' starter used to pitch for the Brewers. Freddy Peralta spent eight seasons in Milwaukee.
  5. No double sweep since 1976. If the Brewers win, according to the source they would be the first team since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds to sweep both the LCS and the World Series.

Summary

  • Brewers–Rays 3–0; Game 3 10–1, with an eight-run fifth inning.
  • Record: seven straight two-out hits; Gasser allowed one hit through six innings.
  • History: of 43 teams, only one came back from 0–3.
  • Game 4: Tuesday night, St. Petersburg.
