Hungarian Cup: round-of-16 draw made – Pécs v Ferencváros, two top-flight ties, three third-tier sides

On the evening of 29 October, after the Szeged-Csanád Grosics Akadémia v Újpest FC match (1–3), the round of 16 of the MOL Magyar Kupa, Hungary's national football cup, was drawn. Nine clubs from the top flight (NB I), four from the second tier (NB II) and three from the third tier (NB III) came through the fourth round. This article sums up the pairings, the rules of the competition and the remaining schedule. It makes no predictions.

The eight ties

According to Nemzeti Sport (the first-named club plays at home):

TieTiers
FC Ajka v Debreceni VSCNB II v NB I
MTK Budapest v Nyíregyháza Spartacus FCNB I v NB I
ESMTK v Vasas FCNB III v NB I
HR-Rent Kozármisleny v Puskás Akadémia FCNB II v NB I
Kecskeméti TE v Újpest FCNB II v NB I
Paksi FC v Zalaegerszegi TE FCNB I v NB I
FC Sopron v Gyirmót FC GyőrNB III v NB II
Pécsi MFC v Ferencvárosi TCNB III v NB I

Own calculation from the table: in five ties a lower-tier club hosts top-flight opposition, two ties pair NB I clubs, and one tie has no NB I club at all. Because of that last one, at least one club from outside the top flight is certain to reach the quarter-finals: Sopron or Gyirmót.

How a cup tie is decided

According to Nemzeti Sport, each tie is a single match:

  1. If the score is level after 90 minutes, 2 × 15 minutes of extra time follow.
  2. If it is still level after extra time, a penalty shoot-out decides.

There is no second leg, and the home side is the club named first in the draw. According to the nemzetisport.hu article, the quarter-final and semi-final brackets are already set, so each winner's path to the final is known in advance.

How they got here

Fourth-round matches were played between 27 and 29 October. Selected results from the Nemzeti Sport results list:

  • Bicskei TE (NB III) 1–4 Ferencvárosi TC;
  • Pécsi MFC (NB III) 4–2 Kisvárda: Pécs knocked out a top-flight side;
  • Zalaegerszegi TE 3–1 ETO FC: of two NB I clubs, ZTE went through;
  • Gyirmót FC Győr (NB II) 3–1 Kispest-Honvéd;
  • HR-Rent Kozármisleny 3–2 Soroksár SC, in an all-NB II tie;
  • ESMTK 0–0 Haladás, 4–2 on penalties;
  • Ózd-Sajóvölgye 1–3 Nyíregyháza, after extra time;
  • Szentlőrinc 3–4 Vasas.

The holders' path

In the final on 9 May 2026 at the Puskás Aréna, Ferencváros beat ZTE 1–0 after extra time; the goal came in the 111th minute, and the attendance was 49,858. According to Wikipedia, it was the club's 25th Hungarian Cup win. In this season's competition both of last year's finalists are still in the round of 16: Ferencváros play at Pécs, ZTE at Paks.

How long until the next match

There are 104 days between the draw (29 October) and the round of 16 (10 February) (own calculation). Because of the winter break, the clubs continue in the league until then – and, in Ferencváros's case, in the Europa League. According to the Nemzeti Sport schedule, the quarter-finals are on 3 March, the semi-finals on 21 April, and the final on 8 May at the Puskás Aréna.

5 things many people don't know

  1. The home side is known in advance. The club named first in the draw hosts the tie.
  2. Three third-tier clubs are still in. ESMTK, Sopron and Pécs play in NB III.
  3. Újpest were the last club through. The draw followed their 1–3 win at Szeged on Thursday.
  4. Ferencváros drew lower-tier opposition again. The Nemzeti Sport headline stresses this: Bicske in the fourth round, Pécs now.
  5. Last year's final went to extra time. The winning goal came in the 111th minute.

Summary

  • The round of 16 is played on 10 February 2027, as single matches.
  • Pécsi MFC v Ferencváros; two all-NB I ties: MTK v Nyíregyháza and Paks v ZTE.
  • 9 NB I, 4 NB II and 3 NB III clubs remain.
  • Final: 8 May 2027, Puskás Aréna.
