Two nights, twenty finals, $150,000 a win: what the first World Athletics Ultimate Championship produced in Budapest on days one and two

The first World Athletics Ultimate Championship opened in Budapest on Friday 11 September 2026 and continues through Sunday 13 September. This is a record of the first two evenings — twenty finals — in numbers. Every figure carries a source; where two sources disagree, we say so rather than pick one. It follows the preview we published on Thursday (in Hungarian).

The Ultimate Championship is World Athletics' new invitation-only season finale: 28 events over three evenings at the National Athletics Centre, a US$10 million prize purse, track events capped at 16 entrants and field events at eight, with no qualifying rounds in the technical events. The winner of each event receives $150,000 and the runner-up $75,000, according to the Associated Press and the Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet. Automatic places went to the 2024 Olympic champions, the 2025 world champions and the 2026 Diamond League final winners; the remaining places were filled from the world rankings.

Hungary's entrants, per the World Athletics press release of 24 August: Bence Halász (hammer), Attila Molnár and Patrik Enyingi (400 m), Boglárka Takács (100 m and 200 m), Luca Kozák (100 m hurdles), Sára Mátó (400 m hurdles) and both mixed relays.

Index, the Hungarian news site, reported 20,577 tickets sold for the opening night.

Men's hammer. Merlin Hummel (Germany) won with 81.46 m, ahead of home favourite Bence Halász (80.30 m) and Mykhaylo Kokhan (Ukraine, 78.90 m). Ethan Katzberg (Canada) finished without a valid throw. Hummel's win is worth $150,000 and Halász's silver $75,000, per Magyar Nemzet.

Men's pole vault. Armand Duplantis (Sweden) cleared 6.20 m to win from Emmanouil Karalis (Greece, 6.15 m) and Sondre Guttormsen (Norway, 5.95 m).

Women's high jump. Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine) won at 1.99 m ahead of Australia's Nicola Olyslagers (1.95 m) and Eleanor Patterson (1.91 m).

Men's 5000 m. Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) won in 12:59.24 from Cole Hocker (USA, 13:00.05) and Parker Wolfe (USA, 13:00.13).

Women's 100 m hurdles. Masai Russell (USA) won in 12.22 ahead of Tobi Amusan (Nigeria, 12.34) and Nadine Visser (Netherlands, 12.39). Hungary's Luca Kozák ran 12.68 in the heats, sixth in her heat and tenth overall, and did not advance.

Men's 110 m hurdles. Ja'Kobe Tharp (USA) 12.94, Cordell Tinch (USA) 12.95, Bradley Franklin (USA) 13.01.

Women's long jump. Larissa Iapichino (Italy) won with 6.90 m.

Mixed 4×100 m relay. The United States won in 39.64 from Jamaica (39.72) and Great Britain (40.26). Hungary's quartet — Krisztián Kalics, Boglárka Takács, Dominik Pázmándi, Zita Szentgyörgyi — finished seventh in 41.21, a national record according to Index.

Men's 400 m semi-finals. Attila Molnár ran 44.97 for fourth in his heat and qualified for Saturday's final; Patrik Enyingi (45.72) was eliminated.

Népszava described Saturday as a sell-out; Index reported that Sunday's closing session had also sold out.

Women's 100 m. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (USA) won in 10.62 — the fastest time in the world this year, per Index — from Julien Alfred (Saint Lucia, 10.74) and Sha'Carri Richardson (USA). AP quoted Jefferson-Wooden: "When you show consistency, like, the drop is going to come."

Men's 100 m. Kenneth Bednarek (USA) won in 9.85 ahead of Oblique Seville (Jamaica). Bednarek to AP: "I'd definitely call it a best win... to be able to come out on top of a really stacked field, it's definitely something to take note of." AP also noted that athletes doubling in the 100 m and 200 m can earn up to $300,000 over the weekend.

Men's 400 m. Collen Kebinatshipi (Botswana) won in 43.39 — a Botswana national record, according to Telex — from Rai Benjamin (USA, 44.15) and Jereem Richards (Trinidad and Tobago, 44.23). The full order per FloTrack: Chris Bailey (USA) 44.27, Matthew Hudson-Smith (Great Britain) 44.28, Jacory Patterson (USA) 44.59, Lee Eppie (Botswana) 44.66 and Attila Molnár (Hungary) 45.10 in eighth.

Women's 400 m. Marileidy Paulino (Dominican Republic) 49.07, Henriette Jaeger (Norway) 49.28, Nickisha Pryce (Jamaica) 49.56.

Women's 800 m. Audrey Werro (Switzerland) won in 1:55.88 from Keely Hodgkinson (Great Britain, 1:56.26) and Femke Broeders-Bol (Netherlands, 1:56.74) — order and times per the official World Athletics event report. Werro: "I'm so happy with the race. I think I have won every race I've had this year during the outdoor season." Hodgkinson: "I'm actually quite proud with how this race turned out. I wanted to win and it ended up pretty close."

Women's 1500 m. Klaudia Kazimierska (Poland) won in 3:57.55 ahead of Georgia Hunter Bell (Great Britain).

Women's javelin. Haruka Kitaguchi (Japan) won with 68.92 m — a Japanese national record, per Index — from Yan Ziyi (China, 68.05 m) and Flor Denis Ruiz (Colombia, 64.84 m).

Men's long jump. Miltiadis Tentoglou (Greece) won; Telex reports 8.34 m, Index 8.35 m.

Women's pole vault. Sandi Morris (USA) won ahead of Hana Moll (USA). Morris to AP: "I'm not complaining about the prize money... They put the stakes out there and athletes are going to compete."

Semi-finals. Boglárka Takács ran 11.27 for eighth in the women's 100 m semi-finals (Telex, Népszava) and missed the final; Sára Mátó ran 57.05 for ninth in the 400 m hurdles semi-finals. In the men's 800 m semi-finals Mark English (Ireland) ran 1:43.74 and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (Kenya) advanced to the final.

The closing session includes the men's 800 m final, both 200 m finals, the women's 400 m hurdles final and the mixed 4×400 m relay, in which Hungary also has a team.

Where sources differ — Takács's semi-final time, Tentoglou's winning distance, the winning height in the women's pole vault — we flagged the difference or left the number out. Friday's attendance figure is Index's. The prize amounts ($150,000 / $75,000) are as reported by AP and Magyar Nemzet; we did not verify the full prize table from a primary source.
