XRP Ledger Decentralized Exchange Since 2012: Offers and Order Books

The XRP Ledger launched in 2012 with a built-in decentralized exchange (DEX). This was not added later as a smart contract or a separate protocol — it is part of the ledger's core functionality, defined in the protocol itself.

What the DEX does

The XRP Ledger DEX allows any two assets issued on the ledger to be traded against each other. This includes XRP, IOUs issued by gateways (representations of fiat currencies, other cryptocurrencies, or commodities), and tokens created by any account.

Trading happens through offers: on-ledger objects that express a willingness to exchange one asset for another at a specified rate. Offers are stored in the ledger state and remain active until they are consumed, cancelled, or expire.

How offers work

An offer specifies: the asset and amount to give, and the asset and amount to receive. When an offer is placed, the ledger checks the existing order book for matching offers. If a match exists, the trade executes immediately (or partially, if the match is partial). The remainder, if any, is placed in the order book.

Offers can be marked as passive (they do not consume existing offers at the same price, only sit in the book) or as fill-or-kill (they execute immediately or not at all).

Order books

The order book for a currency pair is the set of all active offers to trade that pair. It is stored directly in the ledger state, not in a separate database. Anyone can read the order book by querying the ledger.

Because the order book is on-chain, it is transparent and auditable. Every offer creation, partial fill, and cancellation is recorded in the ledger history.

Auto-bridging

The XRP Ledger supports auto-bridging: if no direct order book exists between two assets, the ledger can route the trade through XRP as an intermediate. This improves liquidity across the DEX without requiring direct markets for every pair.
