Where to find a company's financial statements: Hungarian and US sources

Every serious look at a company starts with the same step: finding its own published numbers. Opinions, headlines and forum posts come later, if at all. The good news is that the primary sources are public and free.

Hungary: two official portals

  • Elektronikus Beszámoló Portál (e-beszamolo.im.gov.hu) — run by the Ministry of Justice. It publishes companies' annual accounts. You can search by company registration number, by the first 8 digits of the tax number, or by company name (at least 4 characters), one field at a time, without registering.
  • Free company information (e-cegjegyzek.hu) — the free service of the company register: name, registered address, registration number, basic company data.

Start with the register (is this the right company, is it active, what is its exact name), then open the annual reports on the beszámoló portal.

United States: SEC EDGAR

Listed US companies file their reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. EDGAR full-text search covers electronic filings since 2001. The annual report is the form 10-K; quarterly reports are 10-Q.

What to download first

  1. The latest annual report, complete, with the notes.
  2. The previous two or three years, so you can see a direction, not a single point.
  3. The notes to the accounts. Accounting choices, one-off items and obligations are explained there, not in the headline numbers.

Three habits that save time

  • Write down where each number came from: document, year, page. A number without a source cannot be checked later.
  • Compare like with like: same period length, same currency, same accounting framework.
  • Separate what the report says from what you think it means. Keep the two in different columns of your notes.

Individual or consolidated?

A group of companies may publish two sets of accounts: one for the parent company alone and a consolidated one for the whole group. They can differ a great deal. Decide which one answers your question, and do not mix figures from the two in one table.

If you would rather receive a sourced summary

DAS single-company analysis: one company, one framework (K1–K4), a sourced PDF within 24 hours. One analysis is $5, a pack of 10 is $29; a new customer's first analysis is free with the code ELSOINGYEN. It describes what the documents show; it does not tell you what to do.
