When you need to change money, you usually want three answers: where is the nearest exchange office, when is it open, and what should you bring. This guide answers all three for every Smart Change branch, in one place.
Smart Change runs currency exchange and money transfer branches in Budapest and Szentendre. According to the company, its currency exchange is carried out as an agent of Magnet Bank Zrt. Every branch also offers Western Union international money transfers.
What you can do at a branch
- Currency exchange with banknotes. According to the company, coins are accepted in Hungarian forint only.
- Personalised rate for larger amounts. change.hu offers this above HUF 200,000, by phone or through its online form.
- Pre-order: reserve the currency you need in advance.
- Western Union transfers, sending and receiving, within Hungary and abroad. You can send for cash pick-up, to a bank account, or to Revolut and Wise accounts.
What does it cost?
According to the FAQ, currency exchange carries a handling fee of up to HUF 35,500. Ask at the branch for the exact amount before you exchange. Payment is currently cash only; card payment is planned.
What ID do you need?
According to the change.hu FAQ:
- Hungarian citizens: ID card, driving licence or passport, in each case together with the address card (lakcímkártya).
- EU citizens: passport or ID card, or a Hungarian residence permit with an accommodation registration form.
- Non-EU citizens: passport, or a Hungarian residence permit with an accommodation registration form.
The service is available to adults aged 18 or over and to companies registered in Hungary.
Larger amounts
There is no legal upper limit on the amount you can exchange, but the company asks you to contact it in advance above HUF 3 million. From HUF 10 million, the law requires proof of the source of funds, and Magnet Bank's approval is also needed. In that case, call ahead.

Three practical tips before you exchange
- Check the day's rate. Rates on change.hu are indicative; the rate at the counter applies. The buy rate (what you get for your currency) and the sell rate (what you pay for foreign currency) are different.
- For larger amounts, ask for a personalised rate and call ahead (above HUF 200,000, and above HUF 3 million).
- Bring the right ID. Requirements differ for Hungarian, EU and non-EU citizens; see the list above.
